In the past, Labor Day has unofficially marked the end of the hot summer. But, this year, the heat will continue.
There are some Labor Day parties this weekend, though, that will offer a chance to cool down and catch some good bands. The Double Wide, for instance, has their annual end-of-summer parking lot pool parties of the year on Saturday with Beastie Boys tribute Rhymin' & Stealin' performing. And, on Sunday, country gems Eleven Hundred Springs will perform.
That's not all, though. There are plenty of other shows to choose from this weekend, including the ones we've already mentioned this week.
Tonight, Drive-By Truckers and Centro-Matic perform at Granada Theater, and Kirby Brown plays at House of Blues with the help of Hoyotoho and The Misteries. Also, the very predictable Dallas Block Party in Uptown will feature Dirt Nasty, Beardo, Ryan Cabrera and Secondhand Serenade.
On Saturday, Pinkish Black, RTB2, Shiny Around The Edges, The Angelus and New Science Projects bids adieu to "Free Week" at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios and, over in Fort Worth, The Ugly Beats, New Fumes and Dim Locator perform at Lola's Saloon.
On Sunday, blues legend Buddy Guy will perform at the Bedford Blues & BBQ Festival.
Oh, and since we're not here on Monday, well, you can catch DJ Dirty Cha Cha spinning at Billiard Bar that night.
Hit the jump to see the rest of this weekend's shows.
Better Than Ezra, Dash Rip Rock
Friday, September 2, at House Of Blues
Wow, so these guys are still around? I wonder if they still think that it's good living with you, uh-huh.
Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow
Friday, September 2, at Gexa Energy Pavilion
As easy as it is to pass Kid Rock's music off as cheesy, his live show is pretty incredible. Just ask Observer contributor Cory Graves, who checked out the Southern rock wannabe last February. And with Sheryl Crow opening up, this will probably be the biggest show this weekend.
Jessie Frye, Tweed EQ
Saturday, September 3, at The Free Man
If you haven't been to The Free Man yet, this show would be a fitting introduction. Tweed EQ's bluesy rock has enough of a swampy feel to fit right in with the Cajun themed bar. Singer-songwriter Jessie Frye will finish up the night with her own brand of melodic pop-rock.
MonTango
Sunday, September 4, at The Kessler Theater
You gotta love The Kessler's commitment to doing things a little differently, right? This Sunday, they're bringing in MonTango, an Argentine act that specializes in making music that you can, you guessed it, Tango along with. Makes sense, though; The Kessler is a dance studio for most of the week.
R+R with Play-N-Skillz
Sunday, September 4, at Rio Room
Hip-hop duo Play-N-Skillz have been doing their new residency at Rio Room on Sunday nights for a few weeks now, bringing in hip-hop superstars to make the party that much better. But it seems that this weekend's installment has run a little dry. This Sunday, they'll be joined by some models, which really isn't all that bad, is it? Also, this is the last of their weekly installments. Starting next month, it becomes a monthly deal for the Grammy winners.
Sorta, Slobberbone, The O's
Sunday, September 4, at Dada
Sorta has reunited a handful of times in 2011. It's not all that surprising, seeing as most of the band, save for steel player Ward Williams, still lives here in town. But this weekend's show is looking like it will be the best reunion the group has seen so far. Hard to go wrong with Slobberbone and The O's opening up.
Turbo Fruits, PVC Street Gang, Lonesome Ghost
Sunday, September 4, at Bryan Street Tavern
Nashville has a pretty interesting garage/punk/indie rock scene developing. With Those Darlin's, Jeff The Brotherhood and Turbo Fruits, who will perform at Bryan Street Tavern on Sunday, the city has quickly become a force in underground music instead of just country. Parade Of Flesh's John Iskander has managed to book all of these bands for Dallas shows, and it shouldn't surprise anyone that he's putting this one on as well.
DJ Dave M
Sunday, September 4, at Renfields Corner
Renfield's is having really good deals on cold drinks this Sunday. Shots called Purple Jesus chased by Igloo coolers full of beer should make for a good time. Oh yeah, there's a DJ named Dave M spinning, so we can very loosely refer to this as a music event, right?
Tex Zimmerman & His All-Star Revue
Monday, September 5, at Dan's Silverleaf
A kind of old guy named Tex Zimmerman brings a rather large band to Dan's Silverleaf to play Bob Dylan covers every once in a while. We hear it's not bad.
...and that's it from us. Have a great holiday weekend and we'll see you back here on Tuesday.
