We're not usually advocates of dressing up pets, especially when owners decide to play twinsies with their pooches. Now, that's just wrong. But we're all for putting Fido in a snazzy outfit when it's for a good cause, like world peace or helping other adorable animals.
That's why we're fans of Project Pugway, a doggie fashion show benefiting DFW Pug Rescue Club, an organization that rescues abused, abandoned and unwanted pugs in the metroplex. The nonprofit organization has been finding good homes for those wrinkled cuties since 1997, but those visits to the vet and other operating costs are high. That's why you should bust out your wallet and plop down $10 ($8 online) to attend the fashion show and silent auction tomorrow.
Dress your pug in its favorite tutu or top hat because pups can strut their stuff on the runway in up to two of four fashion categories (spring, summer, fall and winter). You and your dog can also pose for pictures in the photo area and swap clothes with other trendy canines. Tulisoma 2011 South Dallas Book Fair and Art Festival Friday, August 26, through Sunday, August 28, at South Dallas Cultural Center and other locations Tulisoma 2001 Book Fair kicks off today with the Heart and Soul Tour of historical landmarks in South Dallas with council member Carolyn Davis, but get up early tomorrow for the community breakfast at 8 a.m. with Nicolle Pierce, author The Sacred Sermon and Blackmail White Lies, followed by workshops for kids and adults and author readings all day. At noon tomorrow, there's the Pork Chops and Politics lunch at Catfish Blues Restaurant featuring journalist and author Michael Cottman. Admission to the fair is free. Clearstory Saturday, August 27, through Saturday, September 24, at Valley House Gallery and Sculpture Garden The works of David Collins, a Dallas native and graduate of Jesuit High School, are on display in Clearstory at Valley House Gallery. Collins creates abstract and geometric paintings, many of which are part of the new exhibition. See Collins' paintings at an opening reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow night. JAMPACT Saturday, August 27, at McKinney Avenue Contemporary Spend an evening listening to the sultry sounds of jazz, blues and a blend of similar musical stylings from a quintet of talented musicians. JAMPACT features original music from Buddy Mohmed (bass), Jamal Mohamed (drums), Jose Bowen (piano), Akira Sato (trumpet) and Kim Corbet (trombone and synthesizers). Jewish Arts Festival Sunday, August 28, at Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center Ever heard Joshua Nelson sing? If you haven't heard of the African-American and Jewish singer from Brooklyn, now's your chance to hear him chant the Torah and belt out gospel tunes at the 13th annual Jewish Arts Fest at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Nelson, along with musician Rick Recht and his band and stand-up comedian and actor Elon Gold, will perform at this year's festival, which also features arts and crafts exhibitions and food from Simcha Kosher Catering. There are also craft activities, balloon artists and magicians for the kids. The festival is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The Torres Empire Family Affair Car Show features lowriders, booty-shakin' babes and, best of all, Ice Cube. That's right, Mr. Are We There Yet? himself will perform.
