Things are moving along at the new Richardson branch of Alamo Drafthouse, the Austin-based chain known for simultaneously serving up booze, food and great movies.
Construction is in such good shape that the venue says it will open a full week sooner than originally thought, with a new date set for August 9. There will also be discounted soft opening nights August 6 to 8.
Those early preview visits come with added value, with Alamo offering $2 films and half-price food until the official Friday opening event. Until then, the theater will build good will locally with a series of free outdoor screenings on three Saturday nights in July, teased with a "secret" event happening on Thursday, the 25th.
Those announced screenings are scheduled to take place in the new location's parking lot and are filed as Rolling Roadshows, which in Austin are traditionally themed events. Like the Pee Wee's Big Adventure bicycle ride and ice cream party; the annual canoe trip down the river, ending in a Deliverance screening; or that time Austin Alamo projected the film Descent in an actual cave. Consider 'em adventurous feats of cinematic bonding.
