While looking over the year-to-date crime stats prepared for today's meeting of the city council's Public Safety Committee, I discovered a couple of things. One: Through the end of April, Dallas had 13 fewer homicides in 2008 than in 2007 -- a drop of 18.1 percent, if I read my numbers correctly, which I seldom do.

But, and this is far more surprising: You're far more likely to get murdered in Dallas between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight than you are between midnight and 6 a.m. And, Tuesdays and Saturdays tie for the day of the week during which you're most likely to get murdered; Friday's the safest day of the week, go figure. Those are just two of the fascinating revelations contained in the 14-page doc, which is a must-read this a.m. for those who want to know their chances of getting strangled in a motel's alley on a Thursday (which is pretty slim ... so far). --Robert Wilonsky
