Fred Baron, the Sgt. Schultz of Dallas attorneys

Hey, look, there's Dallas attorney Fred Baron on the front page of The New York Times this morning -- where it's revealed, likely to no one's surprise, that he played a significantly larger role in the John Edwards-Rielle Hunter affair cover-up than Baron's copped to thus far. In fact, just a couple of days ago Baron said he didn't find out about Edwards' extracurricular snuggling "until about two or three weeks ago," and he was shocked, I tell ya, shocked.

Maybe so, maybe not, as The Times reports not only did Baron funnel some moving expenses to Hunter and former Edwards campaign worker Andrew Young, who claims he's the father of Hunter's kiddo, but also hooked up the two with separate attorneys who each tried to distance their clients from Edwards and the child months ago. Baron previously said he didn't know nothin' 'bout no other attorneys. As Gawker puts it this a.m. concerning The Times story, there are "some great quotes where swaggering genius lawyer Baron pretends he's an Alzheimer's patient." --Robert Wilonsky
