Amanda Newman sends an update concerning the health of beloved Dada doorman John "Beard" Brewer and the benefit concert scheduled for October 28:

He's doing well. They've moved him out of ICU and into a regular room. He's been looking forward to being in a real room because, as he stated to me Tuesday night, "I'll have a phone. Then I can order hamburgers and plot my escape."

They still aren't sure when he'll be released, but when I talked to him on the phone a few hours ago he was in good spirits.

He's overwhelmed by all of the folks wanting to play the benefit. We're accepting donations in person and by mail at the club, several folks have already dropped by. The benefit is coming along for next Sunday. Confirmed so far are David Garza, Mr. Pink, Shanghai 5, Hard Night's Day, Enormous Magic Verb, Frush (Beard likes the rock), Airline and many others.

And today, one-time Dada darling Sara Hickman posts to her blog best wishes and the promise of another benefit concert at the Deep Ellum venue: "And I’m hoping Brave Combo will come out and we can do one together, like the old days when I wore a white leather cowgirl dress and boots." Ah, those were the days. Edie Brickell has also sent a generous donation -- mighty nice of her. --Robert Wilonsky
