Remember two years ago, when there was all that ruckus over Dallas Independent School District trustees trying to extend their terms -- from three years to four? But a single trustee said: No way, no how. (Right -- it was Carla Ranger.) And remember how, in April 2009, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott's office said, "The DISD board of trustees was not authorized to change the length of its members' terms of office"? And then, remember how Ranger called the attempt to extend the terms "a ruthless political agenda carried out by a wrongheaded board"?
Man, those were good times.
And they're here again: Item No. 2 on the December 2 DISD board briefing meeting agenda is "Discussion of Process for Changing the Length of Terms of the Board of Trustees Pursuant to Section 41.0052(a-1) of the Election Code and Attorney General Opinion RQ-0864-GA." Which is why, moments ago, before taking its five-day holiday break, DISD's public information office just this notice of a public hearing scheduled for a week from today:
The Dallas Independent School District will hold a public hearing to discuss extending trustee terms from three to four years, at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the Administration Building, 3700 Ross Ave., in the Ada L. Williams Auditorium.
Persons interested in making comments at the hearing must register to speak by contacting the Office of Board Services at (972) 925-3720, by 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 29.
