Leading up to September's Best of Dallas® 2016 issue, we're sharing (in no particular order) our 100 Favorite Dishes, the Dallas entrées, appetizers and desserts that really stuck with us this year.

The Free Man has all the makings of a memorable Friday night: A dark, cozy room, live music, couples scooting each other across the tiny square of empty space that turns into the dance floor when things get hoppin'. A little jazz and gumbo are good for you.

One thing on The Free Man's menu is definitely not good for you, calorically speaking, but it's worth the indulgence nonetheless: the cornbread brisket sliders. Fresh, crumbly cornbread muffins are sliced in half and filled with juicy, fatty brisket, brown gravy, sauteed onions, "voodoo sauce" and cheese to create a $12.95 plate of heart-stopping greatness. The only downside to this indulgent dish: The cornbread is so fresh that it crumbles at the touch, which means your fork may be required to finish this massive helping, which comes with four sliders and, if you're feeling particularly gluttonous, an order of sweet potato fries.
