  • Addison Café

5290 Belt Line Rd., Suite 108 North Dallas

    972-991-8824

Quiet, white tablecloth French restaurant has been open since the mid-1980s. The service and some of the cooking seems a lot older-and that's a good thing if you're a fan of traditional dishes such as duck l'orange or steak au poivre.

  • Arwa Yemeni Coffee

    888 S. Greenville Ave. Richardson & Vicinity

    214-782-9749

Arwa sits towards the back of a basic brown shopping center at the corner of Greenville Avenue and Centennial Boulevard. On approach, you might think you're at the wrong place but drive around back. You'll see the sign above the door. Walking in, the fact that you're in a small shopping center in Richardson quickly fades away. The space feels fresh and immaculate, bathed in warm tones with sandy brown and yellow accents.
The food and drinks are steeped in the traditional flavors and spices of Yemen. Coffee beans are imported from Yemen and roasted in-house. Signature drinks include a Jubani made with coffee and husks (cascara), cardamom, ginger and cinnamon. The Adeni Tea is made with premium black tea, milk, sugar and an Arwa spice blend. Monday through Thursday, there are shareable pots on offer with some of their signature drinks ($15). But we say go for the signature sampler that comes with four drinks and four treats.

  • Buli

3908 Cedar Springs Rd. Uptown/Oak Lawn

    214-528-5410

Just off Oak Lawn Avenue sits a coffee shop and café, outwardly modern in décor, that hits all the requisite marks. Not only is there a plethora of caffeinated beverages, there are many edible accompaniments. These include danishes, scones and breakfast eats. There are plenty of stand-alone dishes too. Take, for example, the sandwiches, salads and grilled panini for lunch or dinner. Still, Buli, owned by Allen Goode and Scott Whittall, is primarily a cup-of-joe joint. Among the coffee options are the popular and proprietary Buli Bold and the medium-roast Bliss. Flavored coffees are rotated, including the recent vanilla nut and raspberry white chocolate selections. But not all the drinks are hot. Iced coffees rule the summer months.

  • Café Brazil

2900 Greenville Ave. East Dallas & Lakewood

    214-736-8443

The original Café Brazil Lakewood location may be lost to history, but its colonies, with eclectic interior designs and attentive staff, live on throughout DFW. There's even a restaurant all the way out in McKinney! It is a well-loved and critically acclaimed local chain that specializes in hearty, inexpensive breakfasts, gourmet roasted coffee from a self-serve station and a smattering of Mexican and Southern-inspired dishes. The chorizo quesadilla, honey-chipotle fish tacos, chicken-fried steak and barbecue salmon are just some of the signature entrées. But it's with breakfast and coffee that Café Brazil really shines. Take, for example, the mammoth Brazilian Breakfast special, the vegetarian migas and house-made crepes. If the self-serve coffee strikes your fancy, there are more than 30 coffees available by the pound for a bit of Café Brazil at home.

    3230 McKinney Ave. Uptown/Oak Lawn

    214-999-9444

"Great food fast," is how the owners (Houston chef Robert Del Grande of Cafe Annie and Lonnie Shiller) like to describe this upscale counter service establishment with nine locations in Houston and Dallas. And it hits home. The "oasis," a table in the center of the restaurant with jars of olives, pickles, capers, cornichons, shredded parmesan and various vinegars and olive oils, is a standout.

  • Cafe Duro

2804 Greenville Ave. East Dallas & Lakewood

    214-888-8485

Cafe Duro is a new all-day spot from Duro Hospitality, the same group responsible for the adjacent restaurant, Sister, as well as The Charles. The interior is reminiscent of the famed restaurant Giacomo in Milan, Italy. If you're a fan of muffalettas, you must try theirs, which is made with a fall-apart tender wagyu pastrami. They serve all three meals of the day, plus the most important fourth meal: wine. The menu includes lots of pastries, sandwiches and pastas.

Here's the place to try a cut-rate bowl of rich, briskly flavored tortilla soup. Also on the menu are various frou-frou (but reasonably priced) salads and a nice barbecue sandwich.

  • Fat Straws

    5301 Alpha Rd. North Dallas

    972-702-8181

Bubble tea is something you love or hate. The popularity of this bubble-tea shop shows that a lot of people fall within the former group. It might have something to do with the café being sandwiched between the Galleria Dallas and Valley View Center malls. Named after the wide straws used to consume the cold sweet and creamy black tea with tapioca balls, this location was named the best purveyor of the concoction in the Dallas Observer's 2008 "Best of Dallas" issue. It's a sleek café with ultra-cool design elements to match the variations of flavored bubble tea offered here, such as jasmine blueberry green tea and chocolate banana white tea. Some of the popular selections carry funky names. Would you try the Oolong Iron Goddess of Mercy or the Chocolate Monkey dessert tea? After that, lychee seems so pedestrian.

  • Garden Cafe

5310 Junius St. East Dallas & Lakewood

    214-887-8330

This Old East Dallas cafe is exactly what you’d expect from a neighborhood restaurant. There are chicken-salad sandwiches, turkey melts and meatloaf. There are eggs and bacon and pancakes and other breakfast items, served all day like every good cafe should. They have fresh fruit, fresh drip coffee and fresh baked desserts too. What you might not expect is an interesting decor with exposed brick, hanging lights and custom booths. Or the full garden out back that’s complete with raised beds and live chickens. And there’s a coffee machine that might cost more than the car you drove to get here. Hopefully you didn’t have to drive to the Garden Cafe, though. Tucked away on a quiet neighborhood street in Junius Heights, this restaurant is a local gem, and most of the patrons surrounding you are neighbors who have walked here.

  • Happy Lemon

    169 N. Plano Rd. Richardson & Vicinity

    817-779-2220

Happy Lemon, a Taiwan-based boba tea company, is famous for bubble teas, citrusy teas and slushies, as well as bubble waffles and salted cheese drinks. The menu is extensive and complicated for someone with no experience in cheese drinks, ice and sugar ratios, or boba, but in our experience the staff is super helpful with explaining it. We started with black tea with salted cheese. The verdict? This was some of the best stuff sipped in a long time. The salted cheese sat atop the tea much like whipped cream would, or a foam, and had a similar texture. We alternated between just sucking it down with the straw at the bottom of the glass, and moving the straw within the delightful cheese foam to get an extremely satisfying mixture of the tea and cheese. It was surprising in a good way. Other salted cheese options include green tea, chocolate smoothie, roast tea, matcha latter, dragon fruit and mango. Be sure to save room (or make a run for) their bubble waffles. We selected two original (plain not flavored batter) waffles, one with and one without boba, and opted for a puff cream dipping sauce. Oh man. This was so good we immediately regretted not ordering more (other flavors/fillings include matcha, chocolate, red bean, or Oreo). The waffles were perfectly cooked and warm, not too sweet, with a delicate texture. The air pocket bubbles presented a lovely mouth feel as well as the perfect location to house the boba. They also offer a slew of other beverages including milk teas, fruit teas, smoothies, yakult  and classic brewed teas. They have a large list of toppings that can be added to any of the teas such as boba, grass jelly, red bean, taro balls, puff cream or passion fruit seeds as well.

From the outside, Jen's Place looks like the ultimate gathering place for ladies who lunch. But the parking lot is full at lunch, and it isn't just ladies-workers from the Galleria area line up for the daily special, such as chicken enchiladas, as well as tasty homemade soups, sandwiches and a great selection of fresh bakery items (lemon bars, pie, cookies, you name it). You can dine in or grab efficient take-out in separate cafeteria lines.

  • Jubilee Cafe

    1060 W. Frankford Rd. Carrollton/Farmers Branch

    469-892-5978

Jubilee Café in Carrollton is a dessert-forward Korean-owned spot that originated in Palisades Park, NJ, and got our attention via pictures of its teddy bear latte that is trending all over social media.

What started as primarily a chocolatier has become a cute little café that serves brunch, sandwiches, pastas, a full range of coffee drinks as well as shaved ice, bubble teas, more than 20 flavors ofcakes, bonbons, a chocolate fondue, and of course the adorable little teddy bear.

There's also a nice savory menu. Sandwiches ring in a bit on the high side, but they do come with fries, a salad and choice of hot tea or coffee during lunch until 3 p.m. We chose the grilled chicken and avocado sandwich, each half individually wrapped in paper and full of flavorful chicken, crispy lettuce, ripe tomato and avocado on toasted white bread. The fries were good as well, and the salad simply dressed.

The pasta aglio olio, a large bowl of spaghetti in a simple garlic and butter sauce with a plethora of garlic slivers and chunks, as well as onions, all lightly dusted with parsley. It was cooked al dente and not overpowering in the garlic front despite what seemed like an entire head of garlic.
