    For more than 30 years the Black Eyed Pea has been turning out casual home cooking with a Southern flare for diners looking for a comfortable meal on the cheap. Think mashed potatoes with the skins left on and pot roast slow-simmered until it’s fork tender. They have burgers, fried green tomatoes, meatloaf and enough spinach and artichoke dip to keep the cardiac unit at Baylor profitably employed for the foreseeable future. In fact, there’s a whole section to their menu devoted to chicken, steak and other cuts of meat – all of it chicken-fried. Don’t stop now. The Black Eyed Pea has you covered for dessert too. The famous Banana A’Pea’l layers rich vanilla custard with fresh bananas, vanilla wafers and tops the whole thing off with whipped cream.

    Broncos Sports Bar and Grill in Hurst is certainly no one-trick pony. Though the words "sports bar" have made their way into Bronco's title, and the place is filled with bar games, billiards and arcade games, Broncos is known as a country music hub in the Mid-Cities. Opened in 1989 by former NFL players Ron Faurot and Billy Ray Smith, the bar's popularity and character have only grown with age. Its tall green walls and wooden beams and rafters are covered with vintage beer signs and posters, some of which have been there since they were new-just like many of the regulars who have bellied up to the bar for the last two decades.

    While owner Gloria Rubio is Salvadoran, she certainly knows she's in the Lone Star State and knows that most of us have a special place in our stomachs for Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes. That's why the menu here is split pretty much down the middle between the foods of her Central American homeland and local favorites. There is even an all-inclusive section named Salvatex Combinations that includes fusion platters such as carne de res asada Salvatex (tender grilled steak with chimichurri, an enchilada and black beans with rice). Of course, if you want a burrito, weighty enchiladas or crispy tacos, Gloria's got you covered -- in yellow cheese and heavy sauces -- even though folks really come here for the Salvadoran selections, like lechon asado with plantains and yucca.
