Since 1992, KDGE-102.1 FM The Edge has been throwing its annual (and sometimes more often than that) Edgefest extravaganzas around town, bringing together massive bills like, well, radio stations should. Unfortunately, recent galas have been somewhat underwhelming, pairing one somewhat decent headliner with the dregs of modern rock radio (See: 2009's 311- and Korn-headlined affair; 2008's Stone Temple Pilots- and Offspring-helmed event).
But, hey, it's modern rock radio. You get what you pay for. Right?
Well, maybe more, turns out. There's some actual value to be had this time around. Sure, the douchebaggery remains thanks to headlining act Limp Bizkit sitting atop this bill alongside the likes of Three Days Grace and 30 Seconds to Mars. But a little lower on the bill sit some real treats—and none more so than Phoenix, who have yet to stop through the Dallas region in support of their phenomenal 2009 release, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. It's a powerhouse of an album, but on last summer's festival circuit, the band proved its live show an even more muscular offering well worth checking out.
But Phoenix isn't alone here. Indie darlings Metric somehow pop on this bill, too. So does Courtney Love's reunited Hole outfit, which popped up on the bill in recent weeks. Other bands to watch? Kentucky-based Southern rock act Cage the Elephant and Utah's synth-poppers Neon Trees.
Is this really a concert put together by The Edge? Yup. Now if only we could get the station to actually put these bands in regular rotation...
