Radio Prairie

Growing up in New York City, my childhood Christmas memories are made up of Fifth Avenue's meticulously decorated shop windows and storefronts, the fever dream that is a mid-December visit to FAO Schwartz and standing in line at Macy's with 100 other rambunctious brats and our exhausted parents waiting to get a picture with Santa. My brother Joey's Manhattan Christmas memories include a particularly frightening experience at Radio City Music Hall. We'd scored some primo seats near the front of the stage for the Christmas Spectacular and during the part of the performance where a multitude of livestock and exotic animals are brought out, Joey turned white as a winter wonderland and exclaimed, "That camel gonna eat me!" Now that he's older, wiser and slightly less afraid of wild animals being used for entertainment purposes, Joey can relive his boyhood trauma, and you can levy some emotional scars on your own children, as the Radio City Rockettes roll into town with their eggnog-on-acid extravaganza—a blizzard of elaborate musical numbers that feature frolicking teddy bears, ballet-dancing snowmen, airborne reindeer, rapping elves and child-eating camels. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular runs Friday through December 3 at the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie. Ticket prices range from $25 to $81. Visit or call 214-373-8000.
