The Oak Cliff Foundation has scheduled a cinematic fundraiser with connections to the two events that arguably opened and closed the tumultuous period in this country's history that we now think of as the '60s. The setting will be the Texas Theater, which is best known for being the spot where police captured Lee Harvey Oswald following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. And the movie that will be shown? Gimme Shelter, the 1970 Rolling Stones documentary that includes footage of the band's ill-fated 1969 Altamont concert, where the band's poorly chosen security team of drunken Hells Angels kicked some hippie ass and fatally stabbed an armed young man who may have been trying to shoot Mick. What the movie and the theater have in common is that both are, perhaps unfairly, best remembered for tragic moments. The palatial Texas Theater, after all, was the first air-conditioned movie theater in Dallas, and was opened to great fanfare by Howard Hughes, while Gimme Shelter also captures the Stones in their prime as they perform and record classic tracks. The movie screens at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at The Texas Theater, 231 W. Jefferson Blvd. Donations of $5 per person will go toward renovating and restoring the magnificent theater to its former glory.
