Support local art big time this month by checking out 500X Gallery's juried annual, EXPO 2009. Texas' oldest artist-run space, 500X Gallery, established in 1978, provides exhibition spaces to up-and-coming artists in Dallas. Located in a historic tire factory and air-conditioning warehouse with more than 3,000 square feet of exhibition space, the gallery seeks to provide a space for artists to exhibit free of outside influences and dealer restrictions. An annual contemporary survey of work chosen by a guest curator from the local arts community, EXPO 2009 is open to all artists older than 18 living in Texas. All visual media are involved, including drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and video. This year's guest curator, Gavin Morrison, is best-known as curator of the Fort Worth Contemporary Art Gallery and director of Atopia Projects, a curatorial and publishing initiative. EXPO 2009 runs from noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through February 1 at 500X Gallery, 500 Exposition Ave., with an opening reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday.
