An Entrée of Crumbs

The Hip Pocket Theatre, an experimental arts ensemble, produces original scripts and pieces not usually performed in this area, or any other area probably. The theater's productions are interdisciplinary, utilizing traditional theatrical elements along with music, mime, dance, puppetry and projected images, so if anyone would be able to pull off an interpretation of the works of cartoonist R. Crumb, it might be them. R. Crumb Comix is the latest presentation from the theater group, and we can probably expect such characters as Mr. Natural, Mr. Snoid, Angelfood MacSpade, Fritz the Cat and Devil Girl (along with various other big-legged women that have resonated in the counter-culture consciousness) to make an appearance. Crumb has been a one-man show to himself in recent years, his personality, style and curmudgeonly ways often superseding those of his freakish characters, combining to make a story that has become more than the sum of its parts and ensuring interest in his vital body of work. Are his stories and characters strong enough to live onstage without the touch of the artist? Make the scene at 9 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through September 3. The Hip Pocket Theatre is located at 1950 Silver Creek Road in Fort Worth. Tickets are $15. Call 817-246-9775.
Fridays-Sundays, 9 p.m. Starts: Aug. 18. Continues through Sept. 3
