Christmas is boring in this country. Always the same old tired carols, the fake corporate trees, the insufferable red sweaters with embroidered ornaments. Which is why I try to get the hell out of Dodge this time of year. When I lived in Guatemala, kids spent Christmas Eve lighting what they call bombas, firecrackers loud enough to rupture your eardrum. I also met a Jesuit priest there who was taking Spanish; I later saw him in a San Francisco gay bookstore with one of his hot young students. You just can't beat that. Which is why you should spice up your holidays Latin-style with some Andean flute tunes, Mexican mariachis and Caribbean hip-swingin'. Navidad Latinoamericana, a concert organized by the DFW International Community Alliance, will feature Christmas music from across Mexico and Latin America, including sweet jams from Chile, Brazil and Puerto Rico. The show is 7 p.m. Saturday at Northway Christian Church, 7202 W. Northwest Highway between U.S. 75 and Hillcrest Road. Tickets are $10; children 10 and under are free. Call 972-661-2764.
Sat., Dec. 16, 7 p.m.
