Most of the time, when an artist tells you his work is "about light," what he really means is that he's too busy to deal with your stupid questions, and maybe you should try figuring things out for yourself for a change. Not at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary this week, though, because Starry, Starry Nights: Five Light-Filled Installations really is all about light. A combination of photography, painting, inflated plastic and, well, lights, the show brings together a diverse group of artists, including plastic toy maven Billy Zinser and underwater photographer Jeremy McKane. Chris Lattanzio's contribution is an immersion experience called the "Lotus Room," a Buddhism-inspired space with LED-lit walls, beams of light through the room and soothing sounds. Susie Rosmarin's geek-art fractal abstractions use color patterns to convey a sense of glowing. Zinser, whose work typically takes the form of bold-colored faceless creatures he calls Macrodons, will fill his part of the space with a 20-foot inflatable incarnation of the character, his take on a used-car dealership's giant rooftop gorilla. The show's opening reception is 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The MAC is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Call 214-953-1212 or check the-mac.org for more.
