For anyone who laments the lack of role models for little girls in film, Hayao Miyazaki is your go-to moviemaker. His ten-year-old heroine Chihiro Ogino was borne of Miyazaki’s frustration that books and movies marketed to young girls were all about silly crushes and superficial whatnot—in response, he created a story about a willful little sprite who matures from bratty girl to brave and clever young woman when faced with a crisis. It’s this transformation that gives Spirited Away, Miyazaki’s 2001 animated masterpiece, its heart and soul—anchoring the dreamy visuals with an inspiring backstory about strength, friendship, and devotion to family. It’s a must-see for the ladies in your life, be they little girls or grown women—so load ‘em up and treat them to the Lone Star Film Society’s screening of the film at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell. Spirited Away will be shown at 10 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are between $4 and $8 and are available at prekindle.com/events/lonestar.
Fri., Aug. 15, 10 p.m.; Sat., Aug. 16, 2 p.m., 2014
