Sure, it’s cool to see a giant tree light up. There are oohs and aahs and it’s perfectly holiday happy. But the real draw to Macy’s Grand Tree Lighting Celebration at Galleria Dallas is what happens at the bottom of that huge skylight-tickling tree … what goes down, and around and around, on the glistening ice. For one, there’s an ice-skating, pyrotechnic Santa also known as the Galleria’s Missile Toes. Oh, and there are noted ice skaters — Olympic winners, USA champions, and World Team members — at each event. Friday’s noon performance offers 2014 bronze medalist Carolina Kostner, and USA Junior Ladies’ National champ Amber Glenn. Saturday at 6 p.m. sees those fabulous skaters and raises with 2014 gold medalists and audience favorites Charlie White and Meryl Davis. We’re talking ice royalty under those beautiful lights. Performances continue at 6 p.m. each following Saturday, through December 20, with various guests (see website for details). It’s the “country’s tallest indoor tree” combined with a thrilling and slightly chilling athletic display that kicks off the holidays with a truly exciting show. And all shows are free. Galleria Dallas is located at 13350 Dallas Parkway. Visit galleriadallas.com/holiday.
Fri., Nov. 28, noon; Saturdays, 6 p.m. Starts: Nov. 28. Continues through Dec. 20, 2014
