You know what’s harder than writing a book? Writing a good one. You know what’s even harder than writing a good book? Writing one in a foreign language. Well, if you have aspirations of writing, you can get ready to feel much worse about yourself because Bosnian-American author Aleksandar Hemon has written five critically acclaimed books in English, a language he picked up only three years prior to publishing in it. The MacArthur Fellow’s third book, The Lazarus Project, was a finalist for the National Book Award. This Thursday presents a unique opportunity to hear Hemon, currently an artist-in-residence at the University of North Texas, in discussion with Ben Fountain, one of Dallas’ most celebrated writers and author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. The conversation between these two significant literary talents —who will discuss Hemon’s history, work and the writing life more broadly — is a must-hear. Get to the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture (2711 Routh St.) at 7 p.m. Thursday. The event is free, and The Wild Detectives will be on hand selling books. More info at dallasinstitute.org
