Deep Ellum's New Baker's Ribs Has a Stand-Alone Fried Pie Shop -- and Brisket Pie

Baker's Ribs in Deep Ellum has moved from Commerce Street and South Crowdus Street to a new location at 3033 Main St., at the intersection with Hall St. The new digs are decked out in Western décor and it's every bit as bright, clean and nice as you would expect a new place to be. The signature pink pig outside is pinker and seems to have slimmed down just a smidge.

None of that really matters, though. The only thing that matters to you and me right now is the new Original Fried Pie Shop inside the relocated Baker's Ribs. They've always sold fried pies, but have never actually made them on-site. Now they have more real estate and decided to add an entire fried pie shop.

The Original Fried Pie Shop stands alone, with its own counter and register. One could order fried pies and never have to deal with the barbecue line. Or one could easily dabble in both. If we were one, that's what one would do.

They've also added barbecue stuffed fried pies, breakfast fried pies and cream fried pies, to go with the famous fruit versions. It's like pie heaven, right there in Deep Ellum.

For the brisket fried pie in the photo above, that means from-scratch buttermilk crusts are made fresh throughout the day and then rolled out, packed with meat (only after they are ordered) and deep-fried for three minutes in 100-percent peanut oil.

The resulting crisp, golden brown half-moons are slid into a slim white paper bag and are insanely hot at first. Don't even consider eating one for five minutes, after which oil oozes everywhere. Once an enjoyable temperature is achieved, the pies are fabulous gluttony.

There is still the option to buy the pre-made fruit pies in both the barbecue line or at the pie shop counter, but that seems boring now, doesn't it?

The lunch and dinner fried pie menu includes: chicken and vegetable, chicken and broccoli (That's funny. Veggies!), TexMex (spicy refried beans and beef with jalapeños and cheddar), beef and vegetables, spinach and mushrooms, pepperoni with cheese, "comfort" (diced Polish sausage and potato in a light cheese sauce), pulled pork with a rich and tangy sauce and smoky brisket.

The Original Fried Pie Shop also has breakfast pies, which are served all day. Options include egg and cheese with either bacon or sausage.

The dessert pies include apricot, apple, blackberry, cherry, peach and pineapple (all available sugar-free).

Then there's also pecan and four cream options: chocolate, coconut, lemon and vanilla.

The dessert pies are $2.95. All others are $3.75 each.
