100 Favorite Dishes: The Pad Pak at Bangkok City

As a countdown to the Dallas Observer's "Best of Dallas" 2010, City of Ate is serving up 100 of the favorite dishes we crave, savor and hope to scarf down again soon. These dishes are in no particular order. Some are little known, others celebrated. Some are pricey, others can be eaten on the cheap, but all are delicious to the extreme. No. 82 The Pad Pak at Bangkok City

Try taking the lone vegetarian in the family out for dinner. So many questions, so many special requests. Just stop the negotiations ("but you can get a salad!") and go to Bangkok City on Greenville Avenue (just over the bridge from Mockingbird Lane). Order the Pad Pak.

We always do. There are lots of veggie entrees at this cozy little Thai joint, but this one's a favorite of our family's veggie-worshiper. All the crunchy carrots, snowpeas, bok choy and onions are quick-steamed and tossed in a light brown sauce around tender cubes of sauteed tofu. Yes, tofu. But it's fresh, un-chalky tofu that absorbs the good flavors of everything around it. Served with a big bowl of steamed rice, this entree is so big it always requires a take-home box. And if you aren't a vegetarian and aren't feeling the tofu, you can get it with shrimp, chicken or beef.
