This weekend wishes a farewell to two Dallas gems, the supersaturated
fun that is Giggle Party and the dance hip-hop twosome Sore Losers.
Giggle Party is set to leave for San Francisco next week and will have
its going away celebration tonight at bassist Jason Reichl's homemade
venue, The Handsome Kitten (824 Exposition Ave., Suite No. 8). Playing
homage at the party will be Here Holy Spain, Young & Brave and
Backflap.
Sore Losers, meanwhile, is taking their beats and beanies away with them to
L.A., will also have their last performance as Dallas boys this weekend.
Though both will be missed, don't fret the loss of these two groups. For
the two that are leaving, there are plenty sticking around. And here are
an aforementioned few that are playing this weekend...
On Friday, City Tavern's hosting a night of folk with The Fox & The
Bird, The O's, and Miles Penhall. Meanwhile, the Buzzcocks will be
summoning their inner angst to revisit their best punk hits at The Loft
with Dollyrots.
On Saturday at The Cavern, DJ Sober debuts his new monthly residency that will feature nothing but vinyl, Dope on Plastic. Things are gonna get a little electric up in Denton for Corporate Park, ///Tense/// and Vulgar Fashion at Rubber Gloves. The Double-Wide has Toby Pipes, previously of Deep Blue
Something, and his new (improved) project, Little Black Dress, with
Magnet School and Til We're Blue Or Destroy. Also, Here In Arms, The
King Bucks, Greg Schroeder and Madison King are at City Tavern. And, all day long at Lee Harvey's, you can get your cover band fandom on at Xerofest.
And, on Sunday: If you're looking for something more classic, Ricki Derek,
exuding all the cool of crooners passed, will be at The Cavern. Or, if you want something a little more twee, you can catch Thao and Mirah at The Loft.
More weekend concerts after the jump...
Shiny Around the Edges, The Diamond Center, Dust Congress
Friday, June 11, at Hailey's Club in Denton
Far away from their home in Richmond, Virginia, The Diamond Center will
perform their brand of psychedelic indie rock in Denton as the last show in their tour through Texas. Meanwhile, pumped by word of their DOMA nomination,
Shiny Around the Edges will likely be in top form this weekend to show
VA how Denton does avant-garde. Denton-based retro-folkies Dust Congress will also perform.
YellowFever, Bizarro Kids, Peopleodian
Friday, June 11, at Dan's Silverleaf in Denton
Take Diane Cluck's vocals/yodels, throw 'em on top of some fun alt-rock
beats, and you'll have a pretty clear idea of what the Austin-based band YellowFever sounds like. Complimenting YellowFever tonight will be the electronic pop
of Peopleodian, and the slightly darker Bizarro Kids.
Hawk Vs Dove, PRI, Orange Peel Sunshine & Romp Almighty
Friday, June 11, at Trees
Alt-rock is in no short supply at Trees this Friday with a lineup
guaranteed to induce some fist pumps. Approaching the drop of their
debut album this summer, Hawk Vs Dove headlines this compilation of
other popular Dallas acts, Orange Peel Sunshine, PRI and Romp
Almighty.
Doug Burr, Glen Farris
Friday, June 11, at The Hydrant Café in Denton
Apparently somewhat tired of the promotion that accompanied his just-released fourth
effort, O Ye Devastator, Doug Burr will be performing bits
from its predecessor, The Shawl, at this show. Though the music and melodies are all
Burr's, the lyrics are taken entirely from the book of Psalms. Get wise
with Burr and his sideman, Glen Farris, who also opens this show--both bring a lot to the table for area folk fans.
Whiskey Folk Ramblers, Amanda "Pearl" Shires
Friday, June 11, at Lochrann's Irish Pub & Eatery in Frisco
Still fresh off their brand new release, ...And There Are
Devils, the Whiskey Folk Ramblers take the stage at Lochrann's in
Frisco tonight. Opening for the always rowdy bunch of boys is country belle, Amanda
"Pearl" Shires.
The O's
Saturday, June 12, at La Grange
What's better than listening to The O's play Americana music at La
Grange? Listening to the same thing--but with breakfast. Join The O's at
La Grange for brunch this Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Yep: The new restaurant half of La Grange is open!
Babar, Bleach Boys, Emic, Ops Esponja
Sunday, June 13, at Hailey's Club in Denton
Three-piece math rock band Babar joins punny surf rock group The
Bleach Boys and alt-experimentalists Emic for a night at Hailey's that should serve as a fine closer for the weekend.
Offering a chill pill to the evening is the calmer, more melodic Ops
Esponja.
...and that about does it. Got other shows worth mentioning? Add 'em in the comments. Other than that: Have a good weekend!
