It's that time of the year. Performing arts companies across the city are announcing season line-ups. Just this week, Addison's WaterTower Theatre, dance presenter TITAS, and Dallas staple Theatre Three revealed 24 promising shows and the dates for the Out of the Loop Festival for 2014-15. But what will we actually be seeing of these shows? We narrowed it down to our top 10.
TITAS consistently presents world-class dance and music performances. Next season is no exception. One of the world's most exciting dance troupes, MOMIX opens the season with Alchemia,a performance built around alchemy as a form of interpretative dance that incorporates elements of illusion. There will be performances Friday, September 12 and Saturday, September 13 at the Winspear Opera House.
Other shows to be excited about in the season is the debut of groundbreaking cellist, Maya Beiser, March 6 and 7 at Dallas City Performance Hall and the return of Parson Dance Company April 25. Full Season and tickets available at attpac.org/titas.
WaterTower Theatre's season opener, Bonnie & Clyde, kicks things off with a bang (har, har). Opening October 10, this new musical biography of the notorious Texas outlaws features music by Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde). Then, WaterTower dusts off the classic Tony-winning play, All my Sons to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Arthur Miller. Runs April 17 - May 10, 2015.
WaterTower gives a local playwright a slot in the season line-up next June when it produces Vicki Caroline Cheatwood's Manicures & Monuments, a heartwarming story about a young manicurist who volunteers at an Oklahoma nursing home. Finally, the season closes with Sweet Charity, the Cy Coleman musical with a book by Neil Simon and choreography by Bob Fosse. See it July 24 - August 16, 2015. Theatre Three's season leans surprisingly local, opening with local playwright (and former star of The Waltons) Ronnie Claire Edward's Candy Barr's Last Dance,which tells the story of a Dallas stripper in the 1940's. Runs August 7-31. This is followed with the regional premiere of Hands on a Hardbody, the musical that surprised a few critics when it ran on Broadway by turning an insipid premise - small Texas town holds competition to see who can keep hands on a truck the longest - into an entertaining show. Runs September 25 - October 19.
In 2015, the debut of Jay Presson Allen's Tru, a one-man show about Truman Capote is set to star Jaston Williams, the beloved Texas star of Greater Tuna. Runs January 9 - February 8, 2015. Full season and tickets available at theatre3dallas.com.
