The West Village is getting a new addition this weekend, and it's not an ultralounge with a unisex bathroom or another clothing boutique. Susan Roth Romans and Jordan Roth, the mother-son team behind Ro2 Art in the Aloft Hotel, are opening a new gallery in the shopping center. Ro2 Art Uptown is hosting an opening reception at 7 p.m. Saturday for its first exhibit which features works from Michael Francis, Piero Fenci and Elizabeth Akamatsu .
Piero Fenci, named 2011 Texas Master by the Museum of Contemporary Craft, sculpts modern ceramic vases and vessels that are inspired by everything from origami to Shaker tinware. Like Fenci, sculptor Elizabeth Akamatsu also finds inspiration from a range of muses including nature, geometry and storytelling. A graduate of UNT, Michael Francis creates oil paintings that almost resemble tattered photographs, and his works have been exhibited at The Dallas Contemporary.
Hugo Garcia-Urrutia, Sibylle Bauer and Daniel Birdsong are among the artists whose works are also on exhibited with the collection. The Ro2 Art Uptown Opening Group Show continues through July 17, and gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Visit ro2art.com for more information.
