With the signing of a first major title sponsor, the Dallas White Rock Marathon continues to run in the right direction. At a press conference this morning at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, race officials and Mayor Laura Miller announced that Atlanta-based real estate company Wellstone Communities has signed a five-year deal to be the race's No. 1 financier and nameplate.

"This has been our No. 1 goal," said race president Chuck Dannis. "We focused on a partner that understood our vision of having a great race in a great city for a great cause."

Wellstone recently entered the Dallas market with a large investment in McKinney's Craig Ranch. The partnership allows The Rock to offer more prize money and, in turn, attract more elite runners to a race that for nine years has benefited Texas Scottish Rite. The 37th "Rock" is December 10 and expects to draw more than 4,000 runners and 100,000 spectators along the 26.2-mile course. Last year's race featured 3,300 finishers, placing it 25th in the U.S. I ran The Rock back in 1991. Unlike me, the event is getting better with age. --Richie Whitt
