A great moment in music history.
By Diane Martinez
This summer marks the fifteen-year anniversary of the greatest song of all time. I KNOW. I couldn't believe it either, but fifteen years have come and gone since the first time you heard "Smooth" by Santana, featuring Rob Thomas. FIFTEEN. YEARS. CAN YOU EVEN BELIEVE THAT!?
"Smooth" is a song that has transcended both time and space. Santana's guitar riffs. The lyrics. Rob Thomas' hair. It's hard to believe that the heavens smiled upon us and gave us this great gift. Santana has worked with more than his fair share of music stars throughout the years, but "Smooth" remains one of the guitarist's best collaborations. But why? Why is this the greatest song of all time? I'm glad you asked. I'll tell you.
Do you hear that? Of course you don't because it's a GIF, but I know in your head you can hear those first few guitar notes. You're just sitting there living life, and BAM. You hear those notes and you know. It's "Smooth," and it's time to dance. An interesting thing happens when a human experiences the first few notes of this song. Dance moves become better. Happiness becomes happier. Friendships become stronger. We all already know the lyrics, but there is only one man who can deliver them properly unto the world. Sing to us, Rob.
"MAN, IT'S A HOT ONE" How is this literally the most relevant lyric of all time? The first five words of this song are "MAN, IT'S A HOT ONE." JUST THINK ABOUT THAT. Rob Thomas is a weatherman and also a genius.
THERE IS SO MUCH HAPPENING HERE. Rob Thomas, what is your HAIR?
Where on earth did you get that shirt?
"MY SPANISH HARLEM MONA LISA."
I WANT TO BE A SPANISH HARLEM MONA LISA.
Let's be real: every Santana song slaps. He is having so much fun and makes you wish you were having as much fun as he is. This music video was shot in Harlem. I could get there by plane but common logic tells me that Carlos Santana will not be standing there waiting for me with his band. TRUST ME, I ALREADY THOUGHT ABOUT GOING THERE. If anyone is willing to re-create this video just let me know. It's my life's dream.

SANTANA. BLESSING. DAT. ASS. Need I say more?
I could go on and on about the video. I mean, it's a veritable time capsule of 1999. I NEED Rob's shirt. Suddenly I want a cowboy hat. Why doesn't my boyfriend have earrings like that? Why am I not dancing sexily in front of my window and fire escape? These are all important questions but honestly the monumental success of "Smooth" hinges on the simplicity of the lyrics. It IS just like the ocean under the moon. You DO have that kind of lovin' that can be so smooth. And truly, in the end it all boils down to these three simple options:
1. Give me your heart 2. Make It real 3. Or else forget about it
