Support the independent voice of Dallas and help keep the future of Dallas Observer free.
Jim Schutze just left the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, where Tom Leppert and his eight-piece band were inaugurified, and he sends back these "two amazing discoveries." (Editor's note: The first one got an update at 1:13 p.m., after Schutze phoned back with an, "Uh, I made one small mistake...")
One, Your New Deputy Mayor Pro Tem will be none other than Dwaine Caraway, who replaces Don Hill Elba Garcia in the position. (Garcia will likely become Mayor Pro Tem.) He has to be voted in by the entirety of the council, and that's expected to take place at 1:30 this afternoon. And two, Schutze adds, "Leppert is actually A. Starke Taylor with Botox -- but not enough."
"One other detail," Schutze adds. "While the Women's Chorus of Dallas sang 'Over the Rainbow,' Tom Leppert gazed heavenward, and Dwaine Caraway was checking out the house." --Robert Wilonsky
Keep the Dallas Observer Free... Since we started the Dallas Observer, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Dallas, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Dallas with no paywalls.
