This is why Mary Suhm's getting a raise tomorrow, after city council approves the hike from $255,000 to $267,750 in her annual base salary.

Today, in a memo marked "Important Highway Closure Notice," she notified the honorable members of the city council (and city attorney Tom Perkins and some other city staffers) about the closure of the Dallas North Tollway this weekend. The North Texas Tollway Authority will close the tollroad from Northwest Highway south to Stemmons Freeway from 8:30 p.m. Saturday till 5 a.m. Monday in order to demolish the Cedar Springs bridge, as part of the $50 million upgrade to the Wycliff Toll Plaza and the tollroad near downtown.

See, the rest of us have to look out for those giant signs warning about closures. Council gets memos from the city manager. "Drive carefully and avoid this major highway project!" she writes, and the exclamation mark is all hers. That's gotta be worth $12,000, easy. --Robert Wilonsky
