Whitt's End: 4.10.09

Whether you're at the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End:

*What's more obtuse: That Iowa is now a more progressively liberal state than California, or that the Texas Rangers woke up this morning as the only undefeated team in the American League?

*Feels like the Rangers haven't been 3-0 in a millennium. Also seems like there's something to this red superstition. (The Cowboys' blue jersey jinx was a living, breathing thing in the '70s.) And, I shit you not, the red dot won all three races.

*Screw pitching and defense, if the Rangers score 9 runs per game they're going to have a damn good season. In their first three games they scored 29 runs, and that's with Chris Davis going 1 of 11 with five strikeouts.

*Now I get it. When I picked UConn in my bracket, I was thinking about the women's tournament. Silly me.

*Honestly, I'm going to miss late spring nights watching Stars' playoff hockey. But watch two other teams? Not a chance.

*Here's my idea on how to fix Detroit. Move it to Miami and re-name it "Miami". Fixed.

*Add wildfires and smoke-choked skies to this Apocalyptic list.

*If the Mavericks can acquire Shaquille O'Neal for Erick Dampier and Jerry Stackhouse, well, that's a no-brainer. How about a lineup of Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Josh Howard, Dirk Nowitzki and Shaq. I'd buy into that for a one-year, last-ditch experiment.

*Never thought I'd say this, but the Cowboys need to do all they can to retain Miles Austin.

*Wanna feel even more insignificant? There are more texts sent and received every day than there are humans on this planet.

*There was a time in my life where'd I wake up every morning and listen to Tony Robbins motivational tapes. I know, weird.

*Remember the editor eff-up at the Star-Telegram, where Jim Witt sent personal/personnel emails to the wrong folks? I thought long-time columnist Jim Reeves would walk over the embarrassment. But there he was at the Rangers' opener sporting a smile, and twice as much hair as me. Bastard.

*The NFL releases its 2009 schedule Tuesday at 6 p.m. I'll be here at 6:05 with my prediction for a 9-7 season.

*How crazy is the wind at Rangers Ballark in Arlington? Of the thousands of red, white and blue balloons released in center field before last Monday's opener, half immediately zipped toward the left-field foul pole and half toward right field. That somehow defies logic.

*Nolan Ryan doesn't think about baseball, but he does "thank" about it.

*Rangers' special scout Mel Didier, who's been in baseball for 50 years, says prospect Justin Smoak is a better switch-hitter at this point in his career than Mickey Mantle. Whoa.

*Easter Sunrise Service? Orrrrrrrrrr ... you can join me 8-Noon Easter on 105.3 The Fan. If it makes you feel better, I'm sure at some point I'll get all preachy.
