5 Art Exhibitions to See This Weekend

Jon Revett: The Glacier Project 
In a sense, the minute something is declared “art,” it has been elevated. The process of art making is transformative. Whether it's the whittling down of tree bark, or slathering paint on a canvas, or in the case of Amarillo-based artist Jon Revett, screen printing Islamic tessellations onto to old record covers. The artist's latest work will be on display at The Safe Room at the Texas Theatre (231 Jefferson Blvd.) this weekend in Jon Revett : The Glacier Project. He's interested in cultural synthesis, and pays attention to the records' arrangment, covering walls or arranging them into what he calls “icebergs” ­- clusters of the objects, which Revett considers paintings. This is just the metaphorical tip of the paintbrush in what you'll likely leave the exhibit discussing. See it opening reception from 6-9 p.m. Friday. Admission is free. More at thetexastheatre.com.

Cascade: an Exhibit by Sean Miller
Video artist Sean Miller creates an immersive installation at Pariah Arts (1505 Gano St.) in The Cedars. We don't know much more than that, but having seen bits and pieces of Miller's art previously, including the stunning video work that surround musician Lily Taylor in performance, we can say it will likely be dazzling. Stop by from 8-10 p.m. Friday. 

Art Con: Skewed
More event, than exhibit, the annual summer event from Artist Conspiracy returns this weekend. The event asks 40 artists to take a concept and turn it on its head, those works will then be auctioned off starting at $50. Artists include Sergio Garcia, Cabe Booth, Richard Ross, Justin Clumpner and more. The event, which like all Art Con events costs $10, features music from Pinkish Black, plus Def Rain, and DJ George Quartz. It all happens from 6-11 p.m. Saturday at Life in Deep Ellum.


Danielle Georgiou:365
In much of her practice, multi-disciplinary artist Danielle Georgiou is interested in subjects like femininity and the male gaze. She challenges preconceptions in the off-the-wall experimental movement with her dance troupe, DGDG, and her collaborative project with Hilly Holsonback, Slik Stockings. Her year-long project #iwokeuplikethis, pre-dates Kim Kardashian's selfie book, and contains a collection of photographs and videos that offer an up-close look at Georgiou every morning for a year.  The work will be on display at  The Magnolia Theatre, 2nd Floor Bar - West Village through July 5, curated by Ro2 Art. Tim Kerr at {neighborhood}
Punk rock legend and Austin-based artist Tim Kerr will display his newest work at the Bishop Arts Store, {neighborhood}. We chatted with him earlier this week about his life, his work, his interest in skateboarding. Kerr will be in attendance at the opening reception from 7-10 p.m. Saturday.
