Recycled Cinema A college football championship win recently brought a swarm of notoriety to the Ohio State name, but there are other badass things happening at that university, outside the athletics department. Roger Beebe is an Associate Professor in Ohio State University's Art Department and he's found interesting ways to use projectors both in and out of the lecture hall. He's currently on tour presenting many of his well-known projector performances which elucidate the peculiarities of cultural, educational and industrial imagery. His work explores a range of topics: One piece explains why Shaq and other black athletes are famous Irish Americans, another is a poetic scrambling of Genesis (the first book of the Bible, not the Phil Collins band). High Fidelity Book Club If there's one thing that unites people, it's music. It's been called the universal language, because well, everyone can participate. As rebellious teenagers, we used it to explain ourselves; we create soundtracks for our daily lives; we get pumped up before a morning run. And in light of all of this, the clever people at Off the Record (2716 Elm St.) have put together High Fidelity Book Club, a public club dedicated to reading and discussing music books. This month the pick was Just Kids by Patti Smith. If you haven't read it, dig into it this weekend and then head to the watering hole at 8 p.m. Monday to meet your fellow music lovers. BioMediation If you happen to be in Denton and want to spend your Monday night with something a bit more stimulating than your Netflix account, head to the Merrill Ellis Theatre in the UNT School of Music building for some live electronic music, video and interactive media. Performances include Panayiotis Kokoras, Martin Back, João Data, Yago de Quay and video by NoiseFold with Trio KAZE. The night starts at 8 p.m. Admission is free.
RongRong&inri The photographs of RongRong&inri will be on display at the Modern in Fort Worth starting January 31, but first the Chinese/Japanese artist team will be in town to discuss their collaboration. Meet & Greet with the Cat Circus What's better than a cat? One that can do tricks. Tricks like play guitar, or a million other things these talented feline perform. The Acro-Cats are coming to Stage West Theater in Fort Worth from January 30- February 8, but they'll stop by Lee Harvey's (1807 Gould St.) from 5- 8 p.m. Thursday for a sneak peek. The show will be free, but no dogs allowed.
Joachim West & Thor Johnson Art Talk Late last year, artists Thor Johnson and Joachim West brought their delectably irreverent sense of humor to an artist talk ruminating on the pretensions of the art world, and it was as much a performance as it was a serious conversation. These two will be back at it at 7 p.m. Thursday when they swing through Ro2 Art (110 N. Akard St.), each on a campaign to become the "art president" of Dallas. Hear their stump speeches, which are sure to be cheeky, surrounded by West's beautifully grotesque exhibit, Mother Earth Is a Dirty Whore, on display at Ro2. Entry is free. Almost Free: $3 Double Features at the Granada Theater This weekend you have the chance to catch double feature film screenings at the Granada. On Friday at 7:30 p.m. catch Clerks followed by Clerks 2. At the same time Saturday catch Kill Bill vol 1, then stick around for Kill Bill vol 2. Entry is just $3, although knowing you the bar tab you run up will more than triple the price of admission.
