There are very few things in life that may help ease the pain of realizing you're more than halfway through your life expectancy: some kind of trophy spouse or companion, plastic surgery, some kind of gypsy or voodoo potion that can reverse the aging process. Of course, those treatments come with many unfortunate side-effects such as divorce, destitution, medical complications and magical curses that cause you to grow a tail.
Cars are an old fashioned standby for those suffering from the slings and arrows of frail mortality. They aren't perfect or without their problems thanks to gas prices and car salesmen who are so slippery that they could lube up the shoddy engine parts on the car they are trying to unload. But, buying your dream ride or even a car that you once consider to be "cool" can make you feel a little kid with a driver's license, insurance and a toll tag.
Mecum Auctions is giving you the chance to find that dream ride you always wanted but could only afford the Hot Wheels version of with their annual car auction, which runs through Saturday at the Dallas Convention Center.
The roster of vehicles that are up for grabs includes just about every classic beauty that your gas fueled brain can imagine such as a slick looking 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Convertible that is only one of 20 ever made and a fully restored 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Fuelie Convertible. Some of the other more interesting cars going on the auction block include a 1920 Cadillac Phateon, a custom 1949 Chevrolet Cabstar Street Rod, the notoriously small but eye-catching 1961 Nash Metropolitan and the body of 2010 Ford Mustang fashioned into a golf cart. If you don't have the dough to shell out for a couple of cars, the event also features a "Road Art" auction complete with such gearhead inspired decorations and memorabilia as road signs, flashing neon gas station signs and guitars autographed by Aerosmith, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Santana and Paul McCartney.
