Artist and author Maurice Sendak passed away this morning. He won us over as children by embracing the entirety of a child, including the darkest bits. So when we fantasized about escape after being sent to our rooms, we pored through his books, searching the illustrations for clues and guidance. He was the reluctant uncle to our generation of little monsters and when we grew up, we remembered his influence.
His art is often recreated and commemorated through the permanent (tattoos) and the temporary (graffiti), so here's a few of both. And Maurice, thanks for talking to us like grown-ups. Stay wild.
