Lose Big, Barzelay’s second solo effort, comes out tomorrow and it’s a conflicted/confessional mess of a record that should come across well at a cozy venue like Dan’s. Songs like “Could be Worse” and the title track address the dissolution of Clem Snide and Barzelay’s search for a solo identity. Take a listen to this one:

Born in Israel, but now residing in (of all places) Nashville, Barzelay’s nasal warble is capable of expressiveness not unlike John Darnelle of The Mountain Goats.

This current tour starts in Austin tomorrow and the Thursday night show in Denton is one of the few to feature Barzelay with a full band. Fans of warped Americana should shell out the gas money to check it out. --Darryl Smyers

[Editor's Note: You may remember Barzelay's risky choice of singing The Ink Spots' "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire" at the old Gypsy Tea Room just two days after 9/11.]
