It was quite the scene last night at Murray Street Coffee Shop, where members of the Dallas Family Band gathered for their public appearance together in months to sing Christmas carols for a small collection of revelers that almost matched the outfit in size. And not a bad feather in the collective's cap for 2010, which has seen impressive bursts onto the local scene from member acts The Beaten Sea, Lalagray, Spooky Folk, Fox & The Bird, Jacob Metcalf and others over the past 12 months.
But, lest 2010 close its curtain before the Family Band-tied outfit with perhaps the biggest year of all has its chance for a final bow, we're happy to share with you today this swan song from The Beaten Sea: a Christmas-themed tune penned by co-frontman Jamie Wilson called "The Gathering Gloom in the Stable Room" and featuring Wilson, his co-leader Benj Pocta and backing vocalist Ashley Myrick (known now to many around town under her own performance moniker, Lalagray) each taking turns on lead vocals. The song also features backing efforts from drummer Daniel Hall, Spooky Folk violinist Petra Kelly and Fox & The Bird player Wheeler Sparks.
It's a classic-sounding tune, filled with spiritual lyricism and the same kind of authenticity heard throughout the rest of the band's catalog. Even better, the band has been kind enough to pass along the effort -- the first recorded in the band's new home studios in Deep Ellum -- as a free download to DC9 readers. Grab the track -- and take a gander at its lyrics -- after the jump. And, if you enjoy it and wish to help further support the band, visit the band's BandCamp site and purchase the song in the format of your choice for the low cost of $1.
