Didn't we just have one of these announcements? Why yes, yes we did. Last month BOOM 94.5 FM, Dallas' flagship (well, only) classic hip hop station announced that it was bringing the city its first-ever classic hip-hop music festival, set to take place at the beginning of May. Well, now they're at it again with another festival set to take place just one month later at Gexa Energy Pavilion. This time it's for the return of LL Cool J's "Kings of the Mic" tour, and there's some legit star power behind it.

In truth, it's not a bona-fide BOOM 94.5 production, but it's smart for them to jump on board with this one anyway. (Let there be no doubt who runs the classic hip-hop game in this town.) LL brought his tour through Dallas a couple years ago with a hard-to-beat lineup that included Public Enemy and De La Soul. This time, LL is bringing along a bigger group and digging even deeper into hip hop's history to find them, thus the change in billing from mere concert to festival. (No sign, however, that Brad Paisley will be making any cameos. Fingers crossed...)
Even more throwback than LL is the Sugar Hill Gang, who will be joined on the tables by the Furious 5. Lovers of pre-Giuliani New York City, eat your hearts out, because you don't get much more seminal than these two acts, best-known for "Rapper's Delight" and "The Message" respectively.
That pairing makes for probably the most novel on the lineup, but if that doesn't do it for you then the return of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony probably will. They were just here to play Trees last fall, but whatever; it's Bone Thugs. Also playing are Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Whodini and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Best of all, it's dirt cheap to attend the festival. Tickets start at $25 and, for a limited time, there will be a special deal for lawn tickets for as low as $9.45.
