There's a good handful of shows in town this weekend, including The Local Edge's showcase with Burning Hotels, Mon Julien (Cory Watson of Black Tie Dynasty), Air Review and Menkena at the Granada Theater tomorrow night.
Triple Play: Hunter Hendrickson, Spooky Folk, Exit 380
Friday, January 13, at the Kessler Theater
This is the first of a new series being put on by Dallas Observer and Kessler Theater, in which a band is selected from each city in the Golden Triangle and put on the same bill. Denton's Spooky Folk are the bright spot on the bill, but it might be worth it to get there early for Exit 380's acoustic Southern rock, and stick around from Hunter Hendrickson's blues.

Like make-sure-your-mom-doesn't-see-the-CD-cover edgy. In fact, the
Portland-based electro-pop trio's label thought it would be wise to tone
down the band's name by removing the vowels.
Erykah Badu, Rebirth Brass Band

Ms.
Badu's been back in the news lately. Yesterday, Wayne Coyne told
Rolling Stone he wanted her to collaborate with The Flaming Lips,
and then there's her recent collaboration with Rebirth Brass Band and Mos Def.
On Saturday, she'll be performing with Rebirth Brass Band (a DJ set,
we're told) at the closing of PM Nightlife Lounge, which will also
include a New Orleans-style parade down Main Street.

Bill Frisell, Carrie Rodriguez

Brilliant
guitarist and composer Bill Frisell and Austin-based violinist Carie
Rodriguez have teamed up for a tour that stops at the Kessler
Theater on Saturday. Rodriguez will open, then join Frisell on his set.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Sunday, January 15, at Winspear Opera House
Never mind
that your other Sunday night options are spare (Kittie at La Grange,
anyone?), South African choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo promises to be a
spirit lifting show. And, as Audra wrote in a preview of the show, this band has been around since the early '60s and famously collaborated with Paul Simon on his album Graceland.
Danny Balis
Monday, January 16, at Adair's Saloon
Danny Balis will no doubt be celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. day with a solo performance at Adair's Saloon on Monday. As we mentioned a few weeks back, he's working on a new solo album, and this might be a chance to get a sneak peek at some of his new songs.

excited to see show opener Rayland Baxter, who supported The Civil
Wars on their last tour through town. Baxter is the son of legendary
steel player Bucky Baxter, who has played with Bob Dylan and Steve
Earle.
