If there's one thing all of our Best Song nominees have in common, it's a hook. The heavy-lidded sample from A.Dd+'s "Shit Got Crazy," the chanted tail-end of Mind Spiders' "Wait For Us," the hopscotch vocal melodies of the Colurs' "Easy to Love," the cascading glockenspiel of Daniel Hart's "O Sangeeta" and the hand-clapped chorus of Oil Boom's "The Great American Shakedown" all appropriate different elements of classic pop song structure, and draw you in with a circular melody or harmony.
Does a hook make a great song? Not always. I've decided an 11-minute hip-hop track is one of the year's best, but in the case of our nominees, the hook is the linchpin. Take a listen below. Then vote, vote like nobody's watching.
