Last week, we mentioned a slight rumor abuzz that legendary lesbian nightspot Sue Ellen's was getting an upgrade. Caven Enterprises announced today that that's pretty much official. As of January 13, Caven closes bar turned two-story dance club, Throckmorton Mining Company to transform it into "a larger, more versatile venue that can accommodate a variety of events and live performances."
Sue Ellen's will still operate at its current spot and expected to move in the second quarter of next year. Somehow, they expect to do transition into their new address without any interruption of operating hours. That, I'd like to see.
As for TMC? Well, Caven is thinking of just pulling a switcheroo and putting TMC over in what will be Sue Ellen's old spot. According to the press release, Caven President Gregg Kilhoffer says, "We think our TMC guests would be better served in a more intimate space that resembles what was best about the old TMC."
This adds to the changes going on over in the Cedar Springs strip. Dallas' only gay bookstore Crossroads Market will cease operations December 31 (although the attached coffee shop will remain open) and gift shop, An Occasional Piece, has already closed just a few doors down. Other than Caven's clubs across the street, Cedar Springs is having an identity crisis of late begging the question - could Cedar Springs be the new Deep Ellum? -- Rich Lopez
