Psychedelic Furs, She Wants Revenge
Granada Theater
July 1, 2010
Better than: staying home to watch a brat pack movie on
Insta-Netlfix.
The Psychedelic Furs' Richard Butler had the time of his life last night.
He was twirling, bunny-hopping, and unconsciously conducting his band with his grandiose, animated, almost theatrical gestures and finger-snaps. Sometimes, his gestures mimicked the lyrics of the songs. He even took the time to shake plenty of front-row audience hands.
The Furs put forth a really great show at the Granada Theater last night, with all the crucial cylinders firing--the most crucial of which was them being Dallas.
This was no Dallas concert crowd of legend, with lots of abrasive,
distracting social yammering going on during the set. No, this was a
focused, enthusiastic ,sold-out crowd that, at times, cheered the band
to deafening levels.
Richard Butler didn't have much to say on this night ("Hello!" after
the opening song, and "You guys were great!" at the end of the night), but
it seemed he didn't have to. It was a near perfect performance in every
sense of the word, and the Furs weren't about to let that momentum stop
long enough to chat.
Literally, The Psychedelic Furs walked on stage
last night, launched right into "Love My Way", and hardly stopped to
catch their breath until the encore.
The 3-song encore, by the way, saw them pull out a nice surprise in a
cover of Roxy Music's "Pyjamarama."
Nicely played, Furs.
Critic's Notebook
By The Way: She Wants Revenge is the perfect choice to tour with the Furs, with
their Placebo-meets-Peter Murphy vocals, and a set that featured four
brand new, as-yet-unreleased songs. The Dallas crowd loved them loudly,
and helped them though the chorus of "Tear You Apart." They also sold
every last one of their t-shirts.
Random Note: There may or may not have been a "locally famous Johnson" in attendance
last night as well, according to D.O. staff writer Richie Whitt, also in
attendance!
