We always appreciate it when visual artists and musicians collaborate, whether it’s by putting on a big event, holding a concert in a gallery or museum, or complementing live music with interesting visuals. But we don’t want to overlook the smaller ways in which visual artists and musicians work together, or the visual artwork created by the musicians themselves. That’s why we're highlighting show flyers in this weekly feature.
This week’s flyer is a perfect example of how rock shows don’t need to use vulgar, disturbing imagery just to shock viewers into paying attention.
This thoughtfully composed, subtle and tasteful handbill is quite appropriate for a group of upstanding young lads who call their twist combo Hot Rod Carl. The guys in Hot Rod Carl (who couldn't possibly have been thinking of this when they named their band) and their compatriots in Disaster Us will perform in Dallas next Wednesday.
And how appropriate that they’re playing at the Bar of Soap, a social club that more than lives up to its hygienic name as a watering hole for clean-cut Dallasites. It was designed by none other than the BOS’ own JesSICKa MesSICKa. --Jesse Hughey
