Earlier this week, the Granada Theater debuted a series of posters on their Facebook page that aim to honor some local music heroes and maybe shed a little light on the their building's 65-year history. So far, three in this "Support Local Music" series of "Granada Propaganda" designs have been released -- a "Long Live Texas Blues" poster featuring Stevie Ray Vaughan, a "Long Live Hip-Hop" poster featuring DJ Sober and a "Long Live Rock & Roll" poster featuring Ryan Thomas Becker. A few more are also supposedly in the works.
For now, though, even with just these three images to go by, this much is clear: It's a hell of a concept, one conjured by Granada promotions manager Gavin Mulloy and executed by Art Institute graduate Ian Mgebroff.
"I had the idea when I saw the Star Wars propaganda posters," Mulloy says. "Then I just gave Ian some guidelines, and this is what he came up with."
Mulloy and the rest of the Granada employees were obviously impressed: In the coming weeks, the Granada will begin selling Mgebroff's design both in poster and t-shirt forms.
We're impressed as well -- the illustration subjects are immediately recognizable figures to local music fans, and the red-and-black coloring, coupled with some throwback fonts and backwards Rs here and there definitely give these images an old wartime propaganda feel.
More than anything, though, we just like the whole idea behind them. Charming stuff, for sure. Check out the posters featuring Sober and Becker after the jump.
