The 2016 Dallas-Fort Worth Guide to Record Store Day

Over the past 10 years, Record Store Day has become a behemoth celebration of all things vinyl. Vinyl nerds line up as early as 7 a.m. to get their hands on the exclusive RSD deals, with the most in-demand specials usually gone within the first few hours. Longtime crate diggers, young vinyl newbies and superfans come out in droves.

But RSD is more than just a day of glorified shopping. It’s a celebration of music and the love of music. And  it's an excuse to spend the day at shops, listening to live music and drinking beers with friends. With festivities kicking off on Saturday morning, here's a round up of where to go in Dallas for the best RSD happenings.
Good Records

Good Records are by far the oldest vets in Dallas' Record Store Day game. They're celebrating not only their 10th anniversary as part of RSD but also their 16th as a record store. Good has been doing this long enough that they have their double celebration down pat: Every year the lineup is stacked to the brim with local and national live acts, along with some of the finest vinyl selectors our fair city has to offer dropping wax on the turntables.

For all the fans that could not get tickets to the sold-out Kurt Vile show at Granada later in the evening, there's a prime opportunity to catch him at 3 p.m. at Good.

Josey Records

Josey Records is going hard for their second year of Record Store Day with an eclectic mix of Texas bands. Mostly they're from Dallas, but Austin indie band Malandros and San Marcos' live hip-hop band Taylor Louis & the Legacy are in the mix as well. Josey has gone the extra mile this year and pressed a compilation of the bands playing on vinyl for the RSD event. Josey can be quite an intimidating pile of vinyl to wade through even on a normal day. It's sure to be packed with a throng of crate diggers, and an even bigger event than last year's.

Spinster

Spinster Records will spend their sophomore year of Record Store Day holding it down in Bishop Arts with live music and DJs running from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Kirk Thurmond's soulful stylings kick things off, followed by the always reliable party music of DJ Sober, with a full day from there consisting of an eclectic mix of indie, punk and psych-rock bands.

Crown & Harp

Although Crown & Harp will not be selling records on Record Store Day, they are throwing a big all-day party in its honor starting at 2 p.m. and running till the bar closes 12 hours later. Their lineup ranges from extra out-there experimental music to some in-your-face, heavy dude rock. With Good Records doing their shindig one block away, Lower Greenville will kind of be a mini festival all day.

Doc’s Records and Vintage

It’s a bit of haul out to the far side of Fort Worth, but Doc’s Records and Vintage is always worth the drive. Like most of the other record stores on this day, Doc’s will have free food, kegs and live bands during the afternoon. That in and of itself should make for a fun afternoon in the FTW, but the real prize is the offer of 20 percent off all used vinyl. Doc’s used vinyl section is always filled with buried treasures of wax, so crate digging results should make the drive worth it.

Dan's Silverleaf

Up north in Denton, Dan's Silverleaf is hosting a silent auction to raise money for The Nevada Hill Family Trust. Music and art has been donated to the silent auction for the event. The recently deceased Nevada Hill left a lot of friends and family behind in the music community and they have banded together to help out his immediate family.  Along with a small $5 cover for entry, there will be a wide variety of music and art available in the silent auction from noon till 7 p.m. Live entertainment will be provided by Sarah Ruth Alexander at 4:30 and Baptist Generals  at 5:30. If you are in Denton on Record Store Day, this is a worthy cause to give your money to.
