Rock Lottery 11 Saturday, November 17, at Dan's Silverleaf, $12/$20 The Rock Lottery concept first came from Good/Bad Art Collective's Benefit and Music Programming Coordinator Chris Weber, and has a simple yet creative premise. Twenty-five hand-picked musicians are organized into five bands through a lottery-based selection, then released to practice at different locations for exactly 12 hours before returning to the venue to perform what they have created in front of an audience. The rules are that each band must create a band name and three to five songs, with a limit of just one cover song. The groups are allocated one drummer per band. Each year the Rock Lottery picks new musicians, and in the past has featured more than 250 people from some of the area's most acclaimed acts, including The Baptist Generals, Brave Combo, Centro-matic, The Polyphonic Spree and The Toadies. Tamaryn, Boy Friend, Nervous Curtains Friday, November 16, at Dada, $10-$13 New Zealand dream-pop artist Tamaryn first populated the radar when she and Dum Dum Girls singer Dee Dee Penny covered "Teenage Lust" by The Jesus and Mary Chain, which was later released on a Les Demoniaques seven-inch. Now signed to Mexican Summer, Tamaryn recently released her sophomore album, Tender New Signs, and is playing Dada with Austin trio Boy Friend and local openers Nervous Curtains. -- Rachel Watts
High on Fire, Goatwhore, Lo-Pan, Venomous Maximus Saturday, November 17, at Trees, $15/$18 You may recognize High on Fire's lead singer and guitarist Matt Pike from his other metal outfit, Sleep, who were just announced for 35 Denton. HoF's touring behind their latest album, De Vermis Mysteriis, and this bill also includes black metal group Goatwhore, who just released their fifth LP earlier this year, Blood for the Master. Diamond Age, Blackstone Rangers, Depth and Current, Skeleton Coast Sunday, November 18, at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios, $3/$5 There's not a better show you can see this weekend for a mere three bucks. Diamond Age has yet to release his highly-anticipated debut album, Broken World, via Dallas' Pour Le Corps label.
