If you need some reassurance that the massive amount of hype the Denton music scene has earned in recent years has merit, well, just listen to any of the four Denton Deluxe compilation albums. The discs deliver track after track of stellar songs by a bevy of diverse acts.

And if you don't already have the albums, no problem: Yesterday, Chad Withers of Denton Deluxe put all 112 songs up for free download on their Web site--that's nearly six hours worth of free tunes.

Withers says he put all the albums up to help build interest in the upcoming fifth compilation. But, also, he hopes the albums act as a sort of snapshot/archive of Denton talent.

"I'm trying to keep the website something permanent, like an archive," he says. "There are so many great bands and if somebody from outside of town wants to hear the diversity of music that Denton has then this is a place where they can hear that diversity."

No word yet on the track list for the new album, though. "It's top secret to maintain some level of mystique," Withers says, "and to keep the interest up for its release." But part of it could be that it's not all yet determined: July 15 is the deadline for Denton bands to submit their songs to the new one, which should be out by mid-August and available at $5 a pop at various Denton stores.
