It's a busy Wednesday evening that features a rescheduled arena show, two great club performances and a local bill that will definitely have the oddest fashion sense out of all of these options...
Linkin Park, Circa Survive and Paper Tongues at the American Airlines Center
For
well over a decade, Linkin Park has been a critical punching bag. Seems
most rock critics didn't enjoy the band's mix of alternative rock, rap
and metal. But Chester Bennington and crew have had the last laugh by
selling over 50 million albums worldwide and winning two Grammy Awards. But perhaps the criticism finally got to Linkin Park -- the band's last
couple of records have moved away from the nu-metal sound of the past. 2007's Minutes to Midnight was produced by Rick Rubin and featured
mature lyrical themes that seemed plagiarized from another band. And
last year's A Thousand Suns stands as a concept record about nuclear war. Who
knew these guys had it in them? Tonight's show was rescheduled after
Bennington got sick, but such may prove better for all involved as
Prodigy was dropped from the opening slot in favor of Circa Survive and
Paper Tongues. Philadelphia's Circa Survive is a very interesting choice,
seeing that the band's progressive rock is miles from anything Linkin
Park have done or are currently doing.
Diana Ross at the Majestic Theater
Maybe you've heard of her?
GalleryCat, Jailhouse Monkeys and Multi-ID at Club Dada
Things
seem to keep getting better and better for GalleryCat's Angelo
Gonzales. Throughout 2010, the guy got a lot of love from just about
every local press outlet, and now Gonzales has made the decision to forgo
recording any more albums (for now) and go strictly live. That decision means
folks need to head out to Dada this evening and catch the guy's totally
original sound and live show. Gonzales is simply one of the few area
performers who literally creates his own scene. The guy's slacker chic
is simply infectious.
Sic Alps, Cave and Kaboom at Hailey's Club in Denton
California's
Sic Alps are a wonderfully demented trio who revel in the sheer bliss
of unadulterated noise. Along with such freethinkers as No Age and Times
New Viking, Sic Alps takes the sonic experiments of Sonic Youth and turns
them up to 11. Also on this earsplitting bill is Chicago's Cave, a band
that takes the idea of the psychedelic drone to new (and louder)
levels. And starting things off will be Denton's Kaboom, a quartet of
like-minded mind-benders who may just be the most intense act of the
three who will be performing.
The Slackers, Bandulus and Rude King at The Loft
If
you're in the mood for some ska, tonight's show at The Loft may be just
the thing to get you up and dancing. The Slackers are from New York and
have been doing the heavy duty rocksteady thing for going on two
decades. Led by the debonair Vic Ruggiero, The Slackers are always an
engaging live experience with a horn section that kicks serious ass.
Same goes for Dallas' own Rude King. After moving to our area from
Chicago, this powerful quintet has established itself as a solid concert
draw and should give the headliners a run for their money.
