The streets of Denton were humming last night and venues filled--Jupiter House Coffee on the Square even received a ticket from the fire marshal because its crowds were too big. But, despite a good lineup including eccentric Norman, Oklahoma-based indie rock act Evangelicals, the turnout at Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios was a meager one.
By the time 12:20am rolled around, and Evangelicals graced the stage, the capacity hadn't even reached the halfway point at RGRS. But, as frontman Josh Jones howled out the words to "Skeleton Man", it became clear that those who were at the venue, were undoubtedly there for this show.
The band played a mix of songs, most of which came from band's 2008 release, The Evening Descends. Unlike Evangelicals' Norman/Oklahoma City counter parts Stardeath and White Dwarfs and The Flaming Lips, both of which are also playing NX35, Evangelicals had taken the glitter off the stage and scarves off the microphones. Still, the act had quite theatrical stage presence.
Evangelicals' members didn't seem to care that there weren't a ton of people in the room--they gave it their all regardless, with Jones even calling Rubber Gloves "one of his favorite venues in Denton." And as the band offered up a loud, tight, strong set, the crowd responded in kind, bouncing about the room and screaming back at the band.
It was a small crowd, sure. But if you weren't at Rubber Gloves last night, you missed out big.
