You can trust that Chappelle meant it, too. He was on hand that night to emcee the gala, her biggest and best yet. As Mikel Galicia noted in our review of the show, Chappelle had earlier paid tribute to Badu, who had appeared in Chappelle's Block Party in 2005:

He jokingly introducing himself by saying, “For all the kids who are too young to remember, my name is Dave Chappelle,” which he followed with an anecdote about getting booed on stage in Detroit. In an endearing moment, though, Chappelle introduced Badu by mentioning how much he loves his dear friend, how she makes him want to be a better person and that she is his favorite performer.
As for Chappelle's karaoke? Well, he may not be Thom Yorke or Prince. But with video of The Purple One playing "Creep" at Coachella again making the rounds, days after both Chappelle and Badu paid tribute to him, the timing does feel sort of special.
