With the knockout game having officially arrived in Dallas, and with the two documented cases here occurring in restaurant parking lots in northern Dallas, it would be only natural to assume that the man beaten with a baseball bat outside Smashburger on McKinney Avenue is a victim.
Yet that doesn't seem to be the case. For one, police have the name of the suspected attacker (they won't release it because he wasn't caught). Also, judging by Dallas police officers' narrative of events, it just wasn't very random.
According to a police report, Randy Enger, 52, arrived in the Smashburger parking lot at 8 p.m. He parked near the front door and started to get out when "suddenly, out of nowhere," the attacker ran up to his 1999 Ferrari yelling, "I'm going to fucking kill you!"

Instead of surprising Enger with a shattering blow, as would be expected in a knockout game-style attack, however, the man ran to his car (apparently parked elsewhere in the lot) and returned with a wooden baseball bat. This he proceeded to swing.
The first blow, according to police, shattered the Ferrari's front passenger window. The second, delivered as Enger attempted to start his car, landed on his face.
Here, Enger succeeded in getting his car running and drove away. He flagged down a Dallas cop and related the details of the attack. His nose bled throughout the 30-minute interview, the officer noted, and was possibly broken.
The police report doesn't mention a possible motive. We've left a message for Enger at his office.
